We are just two weeks out from what promises to be one of the finest concerts of the year, celebrating life, music, family, friendship, and charity. One artist whose talent, friendship and love of family is undeniable is Grammy-winning percussionist Count M’Butu. His return to the Holiday Hootenanny has been four years in the making. We in the Atlanta music community and the Col. Bruce army of fans, musicians, writers, promoters, and friends are overjoyed to have him back in our mix and a part of the Holiday Hoot! Part of legendary Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit in the early ’90s – in my eyes one of the greatest bands of all-time – as well as the Derek Trucks Band for many years after that, Count’s presence in the Atlanta music scene has a special place, and as a long-time friend of mine, I personally cannot WAIT to see him back on the Holiday Hootenanny stage! Joe Craven is not just an entertaining musician with a penchant for the mischievous, he is a teacher and student all at once and he will draw you into his performance by including you as thou gh you’re part of the show itself. His gift of gab is unprecedented and his musical knowledge impressive. Joe’s openness and expression of gratitude for the gifts he’s acquired make it all the more fun for him to share them with his audience.
Creativity educator, former museum curator, visual artist, actor/storyteller, event emcee and recipient of the 2009 Folk Alliance Far-West Performer of the Year, Joe has made music with many folks – notably violinist Stephane Grappelli and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia – to multi-whirled string guy David Lindley, harmonica wizard Howard Levy and seven years recording and touring with banjo fusionist Alison Brown.
Joe is a musical madman with anything that has strings attached; violin, mandolin, tin can, bedpan, cookie tin, tenor guitar/banjo, mouth bow, canjoe, cuatro, CBG, berimbau, balalaika, boot ‘n lace and double-necked whatever.
The forecast for Friday and Saturday is a beautiful one! We can’t wait for the music to start up on Friday night! We hope you can come on Friday, as we have Wildman Steve’s band, Blackberry Possum, kicking off the weekend high energy jamgrass and some special guests throughout. These fellas are highly skilled and will blow your mind. They’ll do two long sets so get ready! Bring your hammocks, too, as we’ll have some edge domes set up for your enjoyment, not to mention the jungle gym effect 😉 This is really going to be a fun weekend with friends and family, and the music is going to be off the chains!
The primary goal of a TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny has never been about bringing in the headliner that draws the big crowd – it’s about the extremely high quality of musicians and those in attendance joining forces for a incredible experience that leaves you happily decompressed from the rigors of your daily lives. You always leave with a new band in your head and memories of unique combinations of the participating musicians.

Y’all we’re going to have a fantastic time of it in just TWO weekends! There is some great energy in the air around this last edition of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny; I am so very thankful for having the opportunity to be an enabler of such amazing music with soooo many amazing musicians and like-minded individuals, as both groups have continued to support these wonderful small festies over the years and that is what has kept the spirit alive. Small festivals are becoming a thing of the past, I feel, so come experience why they’re so special! The journey will certainly continue in the new position as Director for Concerts, Community Outreach & Development for the Frank Hamilton School!

We are exactly a week out from being in the throes of one helluva jam at Cherokee Farms! This time next week we’ve just wrapped up the Songwriter Showcase and we’re kicking into a set by the Vinyl Gypsies. At 5PM it’s cocktail hour with Strung Like A Horse!
