Things you should know about the 9th Annual Holiday Hootenanny

1. Every Holiday Hootenanny is different yet offers that same insane musical energy that has defined many of us here in the ATL. We continue to embody the spirit of the late Col. Bruce Hampton, who inspired so many of us to “let it ride, let it roll, let it flow!” I find it impossible not to live life with that as a premise at the top of the list. The Bruce banner will be hung!

2. The Johnny Knapp Tribute will be a two-part segment. The first will feature jazz the way that Johnny played it. This is going to be an incredibly special time. That portion will lead into the second half of the set featuring music that Col. Bruce and Johnny loved playing together. Those two gentlemen meant so much to each other and anyone around them or felt the magic created by these two masters of Zambi.

3. Expect the unexpected. For any of y’all who have been to all of the Holiday Hoots, a handful, or if last year was your first one, you know that is trademark. The final jam is going to be one for the books! I’ll leave it at that.

4. Jim Lauderdale will be performing a full set broken down into solo acoustic > bluegrass > full electric with horns. All of the songs featured he co-wrote with the late Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. This will truly be a remarkable experience to witness.

5. Jeff Sipe and the State Birds featuring Ike Stubblefield, Bryan Lopes, Neal Fountain, Mike Seal, and special guests is about as amazing a way to get the show going. Jeff is one of the finest drummers in the world, and we’re fortunate to have him on board fairly regularly with the Holiday Hootenanny! Check out this fine video of the State Birds minus Ike in an intimate setting. They have a vast knowledge of music so who knows (except for them) what they’re going to do! Soooo much talent.

We are thrilled to announce that two more sponsors have jumped on board with the Holiday Hootenanny movement! THANK YOU to McGriff, Seibels & Williams and Tito’s Vodka in addition to Creature Comforts Brewing Co. for their support this year. We are grateful for the enthusiasm and support that has come our way this year for this amazing annual concert benefitting Atlanta Habitat for Humanity!

Lineup Addition

Please welcome the incomparable Joe Craven as the final piece to a magnificent puzzle of a lineup! Joe was a member of the David Grisman Quintet for 16 years, performed on the legendary Garcia/Grisman recordings, including the most legendary of them all – The Pizza Tapes – that also featured the great Tony Rice. Joe participated as an emcee in several HarvestFests back in the day, and we’ve been fortunate to have him available around the holiday season for quite a few years now and are thrilled to have him on board for this roots music extravaganza! He is truly one of the most talented musicians I have ever known, capable of playing more types of instruments than imaginable.

I know that I’ve posted this video before but it is so damn good it’s worth another viewing! A one of a kind performance that featured 18 musicians on stage for the finale, and it never let up from the get go. Col. Bruce Hampton with the Anywhere But Here Horns featuring Joe Gransden and the late Johnny Knapp (whom we will pay tribute to this year) really let it rip. You won’t be disappointed! Let’s just say that the Holiday Hootenanny brings this level of energy every year, and we are forever grateful to the Colonel for what he gave to us. Zambi!

Where: Terminal West, 887 W Marietta St, Atlanta, GA 30318

The 1st annual Grizz Fest is the brainchild of Grapevine Talent (Fortin, Davidson & Hurley) and talented musicians from all over the country who have been positively impacted by Robert Kevin Meaders (1961-2019), aka The Grizz.

Kevin was a key player in the L5P underground music scene in the ‘80s & ‘90’s, while playing in bands such as The KIND and YUR. He also was manager/sound man for The Grapes, and formed Odom/Meaders Music Business Management Company with Bunky Odom (The Allman Brothers Band). The roster included Derek Trucks, Col. Bruce Hampton, The Grapes, Dr. Dan, The Urban Shake Dancers, and many more. Grizz touched a whole new generation of Atlanta musicians by doing what he loved most – sound engineering, guiding careers & making tons of friends along the way.

Grizz Fest is a celebration of Kevin’s life, music, and friendships. Please come and help us celebrate the legendary life of Robert Kevin Meaders, aka Grizz.

This will be a very special concert for Grizz, and I want to send a heartfelt thanks to Terminal West for providing us a venue worthy of this jam! Enjoy the video featuring The Grapes from January 2014 at the Variety Playhouse. We’ll be feeling that wonderful healing energy in just about six weeks y’all!

TDawg Presents July Shows + Atlanta Holiday Hootenanny Update

19 Jun

Well folks, as I’ve completed my 50th revolution around the sun and begun my 51st, there’s nothing like some excellent musical opportunities to continue the celebration well into the summer. The month of July provides you with two opportunities to attend some stellar TDawg Presents shows (indoors in the AC!) – July 20 featuring Strung Like A Horse w/ special guest Hair of the Dog AND July 29 featuring the 11th Annual Jerry Day ATL! Please continue reading for more information about each of these events!

I know it’s only the 3rd week in June, but plans are well underway for the 8th Annual Atlanta Holiday Hootenanny to happen on Thursday, December 20, and once again it will benefit Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. TDawg Presents has donated over $11,000  the last five years. I am excited to announce that TDawg Presents will be taking the Holiday Hoot back to its original home, the Variety PlayhouseThis edition, as all the previous have been, will be extra special – as it will feature a wonderful dedication to the late great fiddler, Vassar Clements. The first time he performed with Col. Bruce Hampton was HarvestFest in 1999 with Bruce’s band at the time, Planet Zambie, that featured Barry Richman on guitar and Dr. Dan on the keyboards. Bruce crowned him the “King of Kings”. The version of “Time is Free” that came out of that set was absolutely over the top! Vassar & I became good friends, and I feel fortunate that we were able to enjoy his music for a few more years before his passing in 2005. Expect a stellar group of musicians to be involved the celebration of one of the greatest masters of music in the modern era! More to come in the next couple of months.

Well folks, we are gearing up for what promises to be an incredible weekend of reunions with friends, family & musicians both on the stage and off! The Harvest Family Hoot is truly a celebration of the journey that has transpired over the course of the last 20 years in my life and many of the musicians involved. This journey includes not only the evolution of HarvestFest to a nationally known 3-day roots and Americana extravaganza known as Blue Ridge HarvestFest in partnership with High Sierra Music and more than 20 smaller festivals that included 19 editions of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny, two Keel Family Functions and a Cherokee Farms FiddleFest, but also all the concerts that have happened in venues around the metro Atlanta area and various points of the Southeast that are too numerous to recall right now. We’ve all been blessed with such an amazing array of music legends, future legends, and all-around phenomenal musicians over the years! The music never stops my friends.

13 Nov

Jim Lauderdale_2016 Holiday Hoot2

$25 ADV/$35 DOS, Showtime 7PM – Doors 6 PM, Silent Auction begins at 6 PM

Advance Tickets (No service fee if purchased at Terminal West box office)

TDawg Presents is excited to announce the final pieces to the puzzle that is the official bigdaddylineup for this year’s extravaganza. Please welcome back to the mix our favorite troubadour and multi-Grammy winning songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Col. Bruce protégé Evan Sarver (bass), Donna Hopkins, and long-time friend and first-time Holiday Hoot participant Steve “Big Daddy” McMurry from Acoustic Syndicate! Y’all this show will expound the vast reach of Col. Bruce, from his amazing ability to select the young masters to bringing together an array of musicians conforming to one cohesive unit that blows your mind. This attitude and energy transcended not only the jamband scene but also the progressive/new grass genre, and you will witness the wheels in motion.

TDawg Presents is also excited to begin a partnership on the Holiday Hootenanny with the inside-out-logofast rising and critically acclaimed podcast duo of Inside Out w/ Turner & Seth (WTNS). Rob Turner and Seth Weiner have been around the music industry for about as long (if not longer!) than I have, and their perspective combines the fan with a industry insider for the perfect concoction. They will be interviewing some of the Holiday Hootenanny artists for future release. The current podcast features Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman. Please visit their website for a complete list of their podcasts.

We’re going to have an incredible time this year, the energy coming from the confines of Terminal West is liable to blow the roof off the place! What we’ll need from YOU is to come to the show! There will be some great auction items, too, with proceeds to benefit Atlanta Habitat for Humanity! PLEASE SHARE with you friends.

Meanwhile, enjoy this gem from last year’s Holiday Hoot featuring Papa Mali with Col. Bruce singing “Turn On Your Lovelight” – Zambi! #holidayhootenanny
