The 10th Annual Holiday Hootenanny is poised to be a musically emotional experience for all who can make it. Two musicians

very near and dear to our collective heart passed away this summer within about a month of each other, percussionist Count M’Butu and keyboardist Ike Stubblefield. Their passing was a collective blow to our music community, and the 2021 edition will celebrate their energy, both musical and personal, that so many of us felt, as well as the ever present spirits of Col. Bruce Hampton, Johnny Knapp, and Yonrico Scott.

My hope is that you come, enjoy, feel the love, and are inspired to be there for Atlanta Habitat for Humanity and to celebrate the lives of two iconic masters of their instruments and great friends to many.

The show will be broken down into 3 sets:

Set 1: Jim Lauderdale, accompanied by the ATL All-Stars featuring Rev Jeff Mosier, and featuring Jason Carter (Del McCoury Band, Travelin’ McCourys) on fiddle.

Set 2: Grant Green Jr. and Papa J lead the way in this tribute to Ike.

Lineup Addition

Please welcome the incomparable Joe Craven as the final piece to a magnificent puzzle of a lineup! Joe was a member of the David Grisman Quintet for 16 years, performed on the legendary Garcia/Grisman recordings, including the most legendary of them all – The Pizza Tapes – that also featured the great Tony Rice. Joe participated as an emcee in several HarvestFests back in the day, and we’ve been fortunate to have him available around the holiday season for quite a few years now and are thrilled to have him on board for this roots music extravaganza! He is truly one of the most talented musicians I have ever known, capable of playing more types of instruments than imaginable.

I know that I’ve posted this video before but it is so damn good it’s worth another viewing! A one of a kind performance that featured 18 musicians on stage for the finale, and it never let up from the get go. Col. Bruce Hampton with the Anywhere But Here Horns featuring Joe Gransden and the late Johnny Knapp (whom we will pay tribute to this year) really let it rip. You won’t be disappointed! Let’s just say that the Holiday Hootenanny brings this level of energy every year, and we are forever grateful to the Colonel for what he gave to us. Zambi!

I feel so blessed to have met many amazing people because of Col. Bruce Hampton, and one that sticks out is the legendary Jazz pianist Johnny Knapp. The man has performed with a who’s who of jazz music, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, and the list goes on. At age 89, he is still actively performing, and I can’t wait to see him on stage in just five days paying tribute to his good friend. I recall meeting him five years ago at the 2nd Annual Holiday Hoot when Bruce introduced us before the show, and I haven’t looked back. I am fortunate to be a part of the Tuesday lunch crowd with Johnny when I can make it, and it’s always a treat. The countdown is ON, with just eight days remaining to pure musical ecstasy supporting a wonderful cause and dedicated to a musician so revered by so many. Y’all this edition has been a seven month process on several levels of comprehension, and those who are fortunate to attend will certainly feel that energy. Songs are being exchanged amongst the musicians, potential set lists are forming, and yes, there will be some surprises!

Please welcome the talented saxophone player Bryan Lopes and trumpet extraordinaire Joey “Papa J” Sommerville to the lineup. I first saw Bryan perform over 20 years ago with Jeff Sipe, Count M’Butu and Ricky Keller at Smith’s Olde Bar, performing in an avant-garde sort of way. Both Papa J and Madrid Express trombonist Daniel Wytanis participated in the Hampton70 Concert at the Fox Theatre in May, and rest assured this trio of horn players will tear it up with Jim Lauderdale and within the Zambi Jam Finale in addition to wherever else it makes sense! Needless to say we’re looking forward to what promises to be an incredibly special night of music!

We are just two weeks out from what promises to be one of the finest concerts of the year, celebrating life, music, family, friendship, and charity. One artist whose talent, friendship and love of family is undeniable is Grammy-winning percussionist Count M’Butu. His return to the Holiday Hootenanny has been four years in the making. We in the Atlanta music community and the Col. Bruce army of fans, musicians, writers, promoters, and friends are overjoyed to have him back in our mix and a part of the Holiday Hoot! Part of legendary Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit in the early ’90s – in my eyes one of the greatest bands of all-time – as well as the Derek Trucks Band for many years after that, Count’s presence in the Atlanta music scene has a special place, and as a long-time friend of mine, I personally cannot WAIT to see him back on the Holiday Hootenanny stage! Please welcome back to the mix our favorite troubadour and multi-Grammy winning songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Col. Bruce protégé Evan Sarver (bass), Donna Hopkins, and long-time friend and first-time Holiday Hoot participant Steve “Big Daddy” McMurry from Acoustic Syndicate! Y’all this show will expound the vast reach of Col. Bruce, from his amazing ability to select the young masters to bringing together an array of musicians conforming to one cohesive unit that blows your mind. This attitude and energy transcended not only the jamband scene but also the progressive/new grass genre, and you will witness the wheels in motion.

TDawg Presents is also excited to begin a partnership on the Holiday Hootenanny with the fast rising and critically acclaimed podcast duo of Inside Out w/ Turner & Seth (WTNS). Rob Turner and Seth Weiner have been around the music industry for about as long (if not longer!) than I have, and their perspective combines the fan with a industry insider for the perfect concoction. Tickets are ON SALE NOW at the Terminal West box office (no service fee) and online through the Terminal West website for the 7th Annual Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny, taking place Wednesday December 20. Get yours today! We are incredibly excited about this year’s edition and at the same time remembering good friend Col. Bruce Hampton, who participated in not only every Holiday Hoot but also many other TDawg produced events. Be sure you’re a part of the celebration AND supporting a great cause in Atlanta Habitat by getting your tickets!

The Holiday Hoot is now only 8 WEEKS OUT and promises to be an amazing and dizzying night of music featuring some of the finest musicians from the Atlanta music scene and the Southeast region. All of the musicians involved were touched by Col. Bruce one way or another in their development, making this year’s edition extra special. I couldn’t be happier to have the gathered ensemble of players to celebrate the life and music of one of the most amazing individuals in my life and countless others.

The Schedule is as follows and is subject to change:
