Music heals, and I have no doubt that you will emerge from this concert with a feeling of hope that you didn’t have before, and you will be a part of an amazing audience who, along with the musicians, create an atmosphere of love, friendship and family in a climate of conflict that continues to permeate our society.

The 10th Annual Holiday Hootenanny is poised to be a musically emotional experience for all who can make it. Two musicians

very near and dear to our collective heart passed away this summer within about a month of each other, percussionist Count M’Butu and keyboardist Ike Stubblefield. Their passing was a collective blow to our music community, and the 2021 edition will celebrate their energy, both musical and personal, that so many of us felt, as well as the ever present spirits of Col. Bruce Hampton, Johnny Knapp, and Yonrico Scott.

My hope is that you come, enjoy, feel the love, and are inspired to be there for Atlanta Habitat for Humanity and to celebrate the lives of two iconic masters of their instruments and great friends to many.

The show will be broken down into 3 sets:

Set 1: Jim Lauderdale, accompanied by the ATL All-Stars featuring Rev Jeff Mosier, and featuring Jason Carter (Del McCoury Band, Travelin’ McCourys) on fiddle.

Set 2: Grant Green Jr. and Papa J lead the way in this tribute to Ike.

The Down For The Count Percussion Jam

Set 3: Capricorn Jam featuring Randall Bramblett & Tommy Talton

Enjoy this set from Col. Bruce Hampton at the 5th Annual Holiday Hootenanny. It would turn out being his final full performance as part of the Holiday Hootenanny and easily a top 3 set of his in my book! Zambi

Have you purchased your ticket to the 9th Annual Holiday Hootenanny ~ A Benefit for Atlanta Habitat yet? It’s a great way to support any live show if you know you are going. This is going to be an amazing show with some fantastic musical highlights that will satisfy your needs until next year’s edition! Plenty of sit-ins throughout the evening, enough to quench your thirst for one-of-a-kind jams and times with friends and family.

================================

Jim Lauderdale has a real treat for you this year. His entire set will consist of songs he co-wrote with the late lyricist for the Grateful Dead, Robert Hunter. Y’all this 75 minutes of original music will truly be a one-of-a-kind, with acoustic, bluegrass & electric with horns segments all coming together.

To follow this with a tribute to the late Johnny Knapp, truly loved by many in the music community musicians and fans alike, is going to be a remarkable journey through music history. There will be two sides to the Johnny Knapp set – 1) Jazz as seen through the eyes of Johnny Knapp by Jez Graham; 2) Songs that Col. Bruce Hampton & Johnny Knapp loved performing together. Those two men had such mutual admiration and impact musically on each other that it’s hard to mention one without the other.

3 Sep

Wow y’all!  We sure have rounded that corner quickly, and the 17th installment of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny is just about here!  I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend and that your team won! 😉

Now that we’re into September and just over two weeks out, you can clear your head for a moment and realize that you not only WANT to go to Hootenanny, but you also NEED to go!  The amazing energy that is created at Cherokee Farms – the camaraderie of your friends, camping neighbors and musicians – the spontaneity of the jams – the amazing flow of this tightly wound small festie that releases a giant multi-layered musical explosion – the knowledge that you WILL hear something you’ve not heard before and it will make an impact on your already impeccable musical tastes.  These are all great qualities of what a Hootenanny is at the core, a joyful healing and re-energizing experience for the mind, body and soul.  TICKETS & LODGING INFO

A little music history at the Holiday Hootenanny

13 Dec

The first two editions of Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny have featured southern music luminaries, and this year’s is no different.  I am very excited to be able to present three music visionaries that date back to the 70’s with their respective music repertoires.

Randall Bramblett, Tommy Talton & John Cowan helped to define an era of music discovery that ranged from the classic Capricorn Records in Macon and acts like The Allman Brothers Band, Cowboy, Marshall Tucker Band, and Sea Level to the progressive “new grass” sound created by the likes of the late John Hartford and New Grass Revival in the early 70’s, which originally featured Sam Bush, Cowan, Dr. Dobro Curtis Burch, and the late Courtney Johnson in the 70’s and Bela Fleck and Pat Flynn in the 80’s (replaced Burch & Johnson).  These two styles have merged many times over the years for what turns out to be a match made in musical heaven, and the 3rd Annual Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny is going to certainly showcase those two styles.

And you here you have some vintage John Cowan with a great prelude by Sam Bush talking about John.

Here’s a clip of Tommy Talton Band performing last March in NYC at the Hittin’ the Note party.

Jazz Pianist Johnny Knapp to join Holiday Hootenanny!

9 Dec

Johnny Knapp is music history.  He has assumed every role you possibly can as a musician – a pianist, conductor, composer, performer, educator, arranger –  Knapp has worked with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Billie Holliday, Miles Davis, Barbara Streisand, Mary Martin, Frank Sinatra, Paul Chambers, and countless others.

We are extremely honored to have him grace the stage at the 3rd Annual Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny during the sequence led by Col. Bruce Hampton, Ret. on Sunday, December 22, at Terminal West in King Plow Arts Center.  The video above is from earlier this year at Music On Main Street.  Y’all, this show is truly going to be off the charts.  You are going to want to be there to witness the journey!  Get yourself a ticket NOW to ensure your presence THEN!  You’ll be donating to a great cause and receiving the gift of one of the finest performances of the year.

Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny News!!

15 Nov

Well folks, the 3rd Annual Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny keeps getting sweeter by the day, both on the concert side and the silent auction side.  It’s been fun to stir the pot and get some exciting items to bid on (see pictures below for one item!), and TDawg Presents is excited to announce some additions to the lineup!

Los Lobos guitar Los Lobos guitar (2)

Two amazing songwriters from opposite ends of the sprectrum – original Capricorn Records recording artist Tommy Talton (Cowboy) and multi-instrumentalist Jason Kenney – are joining this already on-fire lineup, with just a couple of more to be added soon.  Both bring a passion to their unique sound, full of purity and soul.

Talton is walking music history, as a founding member of Capricorn Records original Cowboy (also featuring Chuck Leavell), and through most of the 70s as a studio musician recording with artists such as Gregg Allman, The Allman Brothers Band, Bonnie Bramlett, Martin Mull, Corky Lang (West, Bruce and Lang, Mountain, Dickey Betts, Clarence Carter, country legend Kitty Wells, Alex and Livingston Taylor, Arthur Conley of Sweet Soul Music fame, and more.  He toured extensively throughout the U.S. with Cowboy and with the Gregg Allman tour, from Carnegie Hall (as special guests) to Fillmore West in San Francisco and most cities in between. Talton was also the guitarist on Gregg Allman’s “Laid Back” album.

Kenney has been performing and recording professionally for only eight years now, but it seems like a generation’s worth of time based on how he plays, sings, and writes.  His most recent effort is a group called the Kenney Blackmon String Band with legendary fiddler David Blackmon, and their album was produced by famed Widespread Panic producer John Keane.

Stay tuned for a couple of more lineup announcements, and SPREAD THE GOOD WORD!  There’s not another show with as much heart and positive energy as the 3rd Annual Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny – A Benefit for Atlanta Habitat for Humanity!  HOOT HOOT!!

Below is nice clip from this past March in NYC at BB King’s Blues Club for the Hittin’ the Note After-party, post Allman Brothers Band concert, featuring the Tommy Talton Band…enjoy!!!
