~ THE HARVEST FAMILY HOOT IS A RAIN OR SHINE EVENT

================================================

Hoot_NightAs we get closer to THE weekend of The Harvest Family Hoot, I’ve been pondering what this event represents beyond a celebration of 20 years & going strong. We are gathering for what promises to be an absolutely amazing collaboration of musicians Friday night, all day Saturday and into the late night, yet I have come to the realization that this event is as much a segue way to another 20 years of reinvention and ways to bring music to the community, be it through the Frank Hamilton School or creating fresh community events that impact my immediate surroundings in the greater Atlanta area. I’m not sure what the future brings as far as camping events are concerned; I am certain that TDawg Presents will continue to provide a reason for folks with different ideals and beliefs – religious, political & otherwise – to enjoy the music together, as music is a strong common bond. It’s important to be reminded in such a polarizing world in which we live that there is more opportunity to unite than divide. I intend to do my part with the former rather than the latter.

I hope that you can join us this weekend – I know that you’ll leave with renewed energy for life and purpose. HOOOOOOOOTENANNY!

Frank Hamilton School Community Appearances & Concerts!

15 Feb

fhs_shelleyManaging Director Shelley Satonin-Hershkovits has published a new blog posting that places emphasis on the nurturing process of learning provided by the Frank Hamilton School – it really is a wonderful sight to behold witnessing people of varying skill levels coming together for a harmonious jam where one can just play what is natural in the moment. It is this sort of environment that can be so welcoming to an individual (take me, for instance!) who has never played before or hasn’t played in 20 years and encouraging towards continuing beyond each session and Second Half to enjoy his/her instrument(s) of choice.

Come Play With Us and see what it’s all about. You’ll be glad you did! The new term begins Tuesday, March 7 & Wednesday, March 8.

The Frank Hamilton School is thrilled to present this incredibly dynamic trio of singer/songwriters/performers and we REALLY hope you can make it on out. Each musician is unique, and they blend together for a wonderful symmetry of sounds. Ralph Roddenbery, Donna Hopkins, and Big Daddy are going to bring it, and we hope you’re there to receive it! Below is a great video of Donna Hopkins and Ralph Roddenbery at Suwannee Roots Revival at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park last fall with a full band backing them – enjoy! A special thanks goes out to Richard Baumgarten for recording this set!

The next video is Big Daddy with his absolutely amazing band Acoustic Syndicate (one of my absolute favorites!) and it’s a five video playlist. Enjoy!

Feeling Grateful

29 Dec

THANK YOU from the bottom of the collective heart that includes Atlanta Habitat forjim-lauderdale_papa-mali Humanity, the Frank Hamilton School, and me, for being a part of the holiday music season. Both The Hamilton Hoopla and the 6th Annual Atlanta Holiday Hootenanny were stellar events, and the musicians who gave of their time and energy for great causes really deserve a loud shout out for participating! Despite all the craziness going on in the world, I am so grateful to be a part of a whole that is so much greater than political/religious/racial beliefs & controversies and provides an outlet for everyone through music and community. Music is a unifying force for all of us. TDawg Presents will return in 2017 with Jerry Day ATL in either late July or early August, perhaps a random event thrown in there somewhere, and of course, the 7th Annual Atlanta Holiday Hootenanny next December!

==================================

Exciting times are to come in 2017 for The Frank Hamilton School, as we add additional days for classes, more workshops, and of course more shows as part of the ongoing Frank Hamilton School Concert Series. We will be expanding our reach to venues around the greater Atlanta area, and look for us to be involved again in community events! We are already on board for the Atlanta Dogwood Festival in April and look forward to returning to other festivals while creating some new paths as well.

 ABOUT JOE CRAVEN
Joe Craven is not just an entertaining musician with a penchant for the mischievous, he is a teacher and student all at once and he will draw you into his performance by including you as thou gh you’re part of the show itself. His gift of gab is unprecedented and his musical knowledge impressive. Joe’s openness and expression of gratitude for the gifts he’s acquired make it all the more fun for him to share them with his audience.
Creativity educator, former museum curator, visual artist, actor/storyteller, event emcee and recipient of the 2009 Folk Alliance Far-West Performer of the Year, Joe has made music with many folks – notably violinist Stephane Grappelli and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia – to multi-whirled string guy David Lindley, harmonica wizard Howard Levy and seven years recording and touring with banjo fusionist Alison Brown.
Joe is a musical madman with anything that has strings attached; violin, mandolin, tin can, bedpan, cookie tin, tenor guitar/banjo, mouth bow, canjoe, cuatro, CBG, berimbau, balalaika, boot ‘n lace and double-necked whatever.

Only eight spaces remain for this one-of-a-kind workshop with the extraordinary Joe Craven!

Frank Hamilton workshop  copy

Joe Craven teaches musical improvisation more from a theater model rather than the requisite model of jazz. Therefore, this is not an ability-based class. If you’re an advanced player seeking a ‘theory & technique’-oriented foray into improvisation from a jazz architecture, this class is not that, yet may be still an enlightening experience for you. Joe connects improvisation to what you already do and moves you forward from there. We’ll focus on ways to think about sound, embrace fearlessness, and address the connection between spoken-word language and the language of music.

Showing up empty-handed, embracing mistakes and learning the value of losing control are some of what we’ll explore. Lots of exercises, with & without instruments in your hands to engage, and free yourself to play with others in new ways. The class will stretch you and may well change some of your perceptions of what music is. It’s a fun and enlightening romp!

Joe is first and foremost a creative force of nature and, as a workshop leader or motivational speaker for the arts, he is without peer.
— Jim Magill, Director – The Swannanoa Gathering Folk Workshops / Black Mountain, NC
