Hoot_Night As we get closer to THE weekend of The Harvest Family Hoot, I’ve been pondering what this event represents beyond a celebration of 20 years & going strong. We are gathering for what promises to be an absolutely amazing collaboration of musicians Friday night, all day Saturday and into the late night, yet I have come to the realization that this event is as much a segue way to another 20 years of reinvention and ways to bring music to the community, be it through the Frank Hamilton School or creating fresh community events that impact my immediate surroundings in the greater Atlanta area. I’m not sure what the future brings as far as camping events are concerned; I am certain that TDawg Presents will continue to provide a reason for folks with different ideals and beliefs – religious, political & otherwise – to enjoy the music together, as music is a strong common bond. It’s important to be reminded in such a polarizing world in which we live that there is more opportunity to unite than divide. I intend to do my part with the former rather than the latter.

I hope that you can join us this weekend – I know that you’ll leave with renewed energy for life and purpose. HOOOOOOOOTENANNY!

Well folks, we are gearing up for what promises to be an incredible weekend of reunions with friends, family & musicians both on the stage and off! The Harvest Family Hoot is truly a celebration of the journey that has transpired over the course of the last 20 years in my life and many of the musicians involved. This journey includes not only the evolution of HarvestFest to a nationally known 3-day roots and Americana extravaganza known as Blue Ridge HarvestFest in partnership with High Sierra Music and more than 20 smaller festivals that included 19 editions of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny, two Keel Family Functions and a Cherokee Farms FiddleFest, but also all the concerts that have happened in venues around the metro Atlanta area and various points of the Southeast that are too numerous to recall right now. We’ve all been blessed with such an amazing array of music legends, future legends, and all-around phenomenal musicians over the years! The music never stops my friends.

We’re getting oh so close to a form of musical nirvana that will leave you blissed out for the foreseeable future I hope! I’m very excited to be bring you the masterful musical minds (and beyond!) of Asheville’s own Snake Oil Medicine Show after quite a few years’ absence. Yes, the band even performed at mine & Stephanie’s wedding! 😉 Expect quite a few sit-ins throughout their set, which will begin at 7:30 PM on Saturday, April 7 on the Tree Sound Shed Stage. Please enjoy the most recent video footage of SOMS performing at Pisgah Brewing Co. in Black Mountain, NC, celebrating the beginning of the Chinese New Year. We’re in for a treat before, during, and after their set I can tell you right now! Snake Oil Medicine Show will be performing at 7:30 PM on Saturday, April 7.

I am also quite excited to be featuring the skills of songwriter extraordinaire Mikhail Peterson, former front man for Copious Jones, with his new band called The GMOS. Featuring the fiddling wizardry of Fiddlin’ Faye, this band is poised to go places. They will be fresh off the release of their first full-length recording. jessgoggans The Harvest Family Hoot welcomes singer/songwriter Jess Goggans to the celebration as an Artist-At-Large! Recognized for her sultry southern grit, soulful melodies and high-energy stage presence, it is said that you can literally feel her voice moving through you. Jess’ music defies genre; it’s been referred to as “get down music,” with influences of funk, rock and blues. You might feel as if you’re hearing Janis Joplin live in concert! Her presence is a great addition to the potpourri of musical styles that will be front and center in April and we’re thrilled to have her on board.

The countdown is ON, with just eight days remaining to pure musical ecstasy supporting a wonderful cause and dedicated to a musician so revered by so many. Y’all this edition has been a seven month process on several levels of comprehension, and those who are fortunate to attend will certainly feel that energy. Songs are being exchanged amongst the musicians, potential set lists are forming, and yes, there will be some surprises!

Please welcome the talented saxophone player Bryan Lopes and trumpet extraordinaire Joey “Papa J” Sommerville to the lineup. I first saw Bryan perform over 20 years ago with Jeff Sipe, Count M’Butu and Ricky Keller at Smith’s Olde Bar, performing in an avant-garde sort of way. Both Papa J and Madrid Express trombonist Daniel Wytanis participated in the Hampton70 Concert at the Fox Theatre in May, and rest assured this trio of horn players will tear it up with Jim Lauderdale and within the Zambi Jam Finale in addition to wherever else it makes sense! Needless to say we’re looking forward to what promises to be an incredibly special night of music!

We are just two weeks out from what promises to be one of the finest concerts of the year, celebrating life, music, family, friendship, and charity. One artist whose talent, friendship and love of family is undeniable is Grammy-winning percussionist Count M’Butu. His return to the Holiday Hootenanny has been four years in the making. We in the Atlanta music community and the Col. Bruce army of fans, musicians, writers, promoters, and friends are overjoyed to have him back in our mix and a part of the Holiday Hoot! Part of legendary Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit in the early ’90s – in my eyes one of the greatest bands of all-time – as well as the Derek Trucks Band for many years after that, Count’s presence in the Atlanta music scene has a special place, and as a long-time friend of mine, I personally cannot WAIT to see him back on the Holiday Hootenanny stage! The video below is from the 2nd Annual edition of the Holiday Hoot, and features Count M’Butu SINGING Willie Nelson’s classic “Always On My Mind” with the help of some friends, about as real and genuine as it gets. Please welcome back to the mix our favorite troubadour and multi-Grammy winning songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Col. Bruce protégé Evan Sarver (bass), Donna Hopkins, and long-time friend and first-time Holiday Hoot participant Steve “Big Daddy” McMurry from Acoustic Syndicate! Y’all this show will expound the vast reach of Col. Bruce, from his amazing ability to select the young masters to bringing together an array of musicians conforming to one cohesive unit that blows your mind. This attitude and energy transcended not only the jamband scene but also the progressive/new grass genre, and you will witness the wheels in motion.

TDawg Presents is also excited to begin a partnership on the Holiday Hootenanny with the fast rising and critically acclaimed podcast duo of Inside Out w/ Turner & Seth (WTNS). Rob Turner and Seth Weiner have been around the music industry for about as long (if not longer!) than I have, and their perspective combines the fan with a industry insider for the perfect concoction. Get Off The Grid Fest – an earthly community fair for renewable energy, sustainable lifestyle and brilliant homegrown music – launches its CD at LEJ Recordings in Ellijay, GA Thursday, April 27th.

You are invited to tune in online on Thursday and come on out and get off the grid with us August 18-20! After the launch party, the CDs will be on sale at www.getoffthegridfest.com. The CDs are your ticket to Get Off The Grid Fest.
