TDawg Presents ~ One Chapter Ends, Another Begins

8 Dec

T-DawgI started this musical journey in 1998 not knowing where it would lead me, if I would even last in this industry.  Col. Bruce warned me after I informed him of my intentions to start a camping festival and become an independent promoter, and I paraphrase him here, “Don’t do it.  You’re too nice a guy.  It’s a cut-throat business.”  Well, I did it, all the while remaining a nice guy about it and forging through the cut-throat b.s., of which he is correct that there is a lot of it that goes around.  Many magical and musical moments have occurred between 1998 and the present, more than I can describe now, but the list of artists that I have been able to work with and develop relationships with on both a business and a personal level is a fine one.

After seven Peter_Tony_VassarHarvestFests (the last one we canceled in 2005 due to extreme hurricanes, Katrina & Rita, in the region), 18 editions of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny, two Keel Family Functions, and one Cherokee Farms FiddleFest, I will be producing my 19th and final Back Porch Hootenanny the first weekend in April at Cherokee Farms in LaFayette, GA, and it will also be my final camping event for the foreseeable and indefinite future.

I say this with extreme excitement for what is around the corner, as I begin a new path, a new chapter in my life working for the newly formed Frank Hamilton Folk School.  Bringing the spirit of Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music to Atlanta, I am extremely honored to be a part of the whole, led by legendary folk musician Frank Hamilton, co-founder of the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago in 1957 and a part of the copyright for the civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome”.  One of my principal duties will include producing a series of concerts in the name of the Frank Hamilton Folk School, and you will still see the accustomed quality that TDawg Presents concerts have maintained for the last 17 1/2 years, but with the purpose of supporting the non-profit FHFS.  I also plan to dive into fundraising and grant-writing for the school.

Like the Old Town School, Frank Hamilton Folk School brings a classroom technique based uponFHFS2 traditional oral and folk teaching methods: listening, watching, trial and error, and playing by ear. Where other music schools teach sight reading and performance, the Old Town School “method” of retaining its emphasis on participation and development of aural skills is tried and true, more of a communal approach to the music.  You really don’t need to know how to play an instrument in order to get going!

I’m looking forward to making a difference in our local communities, with plans to ultimately speak with public school systems, private schools, and local governments in order to bring this style of teaching and social interaction to children and adults alike.  Also expect Hootenannies to revive in a more traditional sense.  While I won’t be producing camping events, look for more opportunities in an urban setting in the future, both indoors and outdoors and most of which will impact the folk school directly and the community as a result! Stay tuned for details!  For complete information about the Frank Hamilton Folk School, please visit the website at http://frankhamiltonfolkschool.org.

I’ll end this post on this thought – Come and support the Holiday Hootenanny (which will continue!) and the final spring edition of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny, and let’s celebrate our love of music and what lies in store for the future.  TDawg Presents isn’t over, just turning the page and starting a new chapter that will bring many more great memories and experiences!  HOOOOOOTENANNY!!!

About Jim LauderdaleJim'n'TDawg

Jim Lauderdale (pictured right with yours truly in a deep conversation) is a multiple Grammy® (2002 collaboration with Dr. Ralph Stanley and in 2007 for Bluegrass Diaries) and Americana Music Association Award-winning musician and one of the most respected artists working the Americana, Bluegrass and Country music communities today.

Jim Lauderdale has always stayed true to his North Carolina roots but is influenced from the experience of his travels.  He first immersed himself in the early country music scenes of both New York City and Los Angeles before breaking through in Nashville as a songwriter.  He has helped pave the way of the current Americana movement recording records and writing songs that cross genres from country, pop, roots, rock, soul and bluegrass.

Lauderdale, a master songwriter, has had his work recorded by artists such as Patty Loveless, George Jones, Shelby Lynne, Solomon Burke, The Dixie Chicks, Blake Shelton, Lee Ann Womack, Gary Allan, and George Strait, who has had numerous hits with Jim’s songs.  Lauderdale’s music has been featured regularly on the ABC hit show Nashville, and he appeared in the successful film Country Strong.

Jim is often called upon as a player and has toured with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rhonda Vincent, Hot Tuna & Charlie Musselwhite and Elvis Costello. He also co-hosts a weekly radio show on SiriusXM with Buddy Miller called “The Buddy & Jim Show,” which NPR’s Fresh Air described as “…highly entertaining…”  Lauderdale is also the host of the popular Music City Roots each week in Nashville and Scenic City Roots monthly in Chattanooga, TN.

He has collaborated with legends like Ralph Stanley, Elvis Costello and Robert Hunter and is also a critically acclaimed solo artist with dozens of studio releases, including his latest effort, and arguably his finest, I’m A Song…

Click here to read more about Jim Lauderdale and explore his website.  You’ll be glad you did!  Such a soulful and gifted singer/songwriter!  You never know what you will get, and with the all-star group of musicians gathering for the Holiday Hootenanny, you KNOW you will get one helluva set from Jim!

Doors 7:00PM, Showtime 8PM, $14 ADV Purchase NOW ($17 DOOR)!

Terminal West and TDawg Presents are excited to bring you a hot, hot show to kick off your July 4 weekend featuring The Larry Keel ExperienceDangermuffin, and The Jugtime Ragband!  THURSDAY, JULY 2 promises to be a smokin’ night of absolutely stellar acoustic music, exploratory and traditional simultaneously while taking you on a journey from 20’s ragtime jazz to progressive acoustic music that embodies elements of old-school bluegrass, new grass, and folk-rock.  Personally, I am thrilled to have long-time bluegrass buddies and shenanigan cohorts The Larry Keel Experience performing on the Terminal West stage.  This is a great room for them, and to add the skills and sounds of Dangermuffin to the night just makes this a rock solid night.  The addition of Atlanta’s own The Jugtime Ragband seals the deal for one helluva show!

Keel is regarded by many as one of the most powerful, innovative and all-out exhilarating acoustic flatpicking guitarists performing today.  I tend to agree!  LKE was part of every HarvestFest I did and was the first non-festival venue show I ever produced.  It’s a joy and a pleasure to continue working with him, his lovely wife and extraordinary bassist Jenny, and the highly esteemed banjoist Will Lee any chance I can.  LKE has been tearing it up across the country, and Larry has had the opportunity to participate in several special lineups recently.  Rest assured you will walk away mesmerized by what transpires on the stage that night.  Below is a video of an entrire long set following Dangermuffin and shot on 2/26/15 in Asheville, NC at the Asheville Music Hall courtesy of Independent Arts & Music of Asheville.

For those of you who have not been turned on Dangermuffin yet, well, you’re in for a treat.  Their Friday night showcase performance at TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny back in April was off the charts musically, a defining two-set gem.  This incredibly dynamic trio brings out a sound that captures you in their groove almost instantly.  It will be a pleasure to witness a jam with The Larry Keel Experience, as these buddies know how to throw down when together!  Below is a video of Dangermuffin from The Pour House in Charleston that you will enjoy.

The Jugtime Ragband is homegrown out of the Atlanta music scene and one of my favorite finds of the last couple of years.  Their infectious 20’s style ragtime jazz sound with a modern twist will have you moving from the get go, and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised in the end to see them on stage in some form or fashion late in the night for a jam.

Strung Like A Horse (10:30-midnight) is going to take the 18th edition of the Hootenanny out with a bang!  Check out this great video shot at Cherokee Farms in LaFayette, GA, of the song “Gypsy Jane”.

TDawg Presents welcomes back Packway Handle Band (8:30PM-10PM) to the Hootenanny stage for the second time!  This Athens, GA-based quintet really grips you as they make their way through their set with genuine songwriting and tight instrumentation, single-mic or all-electric.  You don’t know what you’ll get sometimes!!  Check out this clip from Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Packway Handle Band performing “I Wish I hadn’t Done It”.

Please welcome Jason Kenney (6:15PM-7:45PM) to the Hootenanny stage for the first time!  This incredible singer/songwriter comes from just down the road in Dahlonega, and you feel the local roots in his music.  Pure and true is his music, and you’ll see for yourself in the video for “Turn This Sorrow Into Joy”, title track from his latest album.

Atlanta’s own Cajun masters Hair of the Dog bring their rockin’ sound to the Tree Stage at the Hootenanny for the first time!  Trust me, they’re the real deal.  Been around a long time playing what they love, and pedal steel maestro Bill Fleming will keep his rig up there for the rest of the evening so you never know what will happen with all those great musicians gathered all night long!  Check out this raw yet rockin’ clip from a neighborhood party (I was there!) featuring HoD performing “Leona Had A Party”.  Your whole family will be kickin it during this set!

The Higher Choir (1:45PM-3:15PM) has been climbing the ladder for several years now, and folks, they very well might be reaching a moment of reckoning, in a state of mind where their Southern rock sound touches your bones and your soul!  They wowed the crowd on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Cruise, have been packing venues around the Southeast, and as you see from this video, “The Working Title” from their CD Release party in 2013, it’s a kickin’ sound that has you boogey’in!  I first saw these folks at the Wheelbarrow Fest in Reynoldstown a few years back, and they blew me away!

Performing on the Music On Main Street (MOMS) stage, Gibson Wilbanks Band is going to bring two sets (3:15PM-4PM, 5:30PM-6:15PM) , one after The Higher Choir and the second after Hair of the Dog, that are gonna have you groovin’ even more so.  The interlay of slide and rhythm by both Carly Gibson and BJ Wilbanks, along with at-large artist Richie Jones on drums and the insane harmonica of Brad Bauman, will make these two sets ones you don’t want to miss!  The soulfulness comes through loud and clear on this video, enjoy!

Del McCoury met David Grisman met at the first show Del ever played (on banjo) with Bill Monroe in the spring of 1963 at New York University in Greenwich Village. Three years later, Del & Dawg played their first gig together in Troy, NY at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They both celebrated the arrival of first-born sons, Monroe Grisman and Ronnie McCoury, within a month of each other.

Through the years they have shared the stage at venues and festivals across the country and in 2012 released Hardcore Bluegrass, a unique collection of bluegrass classics, made at two Dawg studio jam sessions in the 1990s, Del & Dawg celebrates the nearly 50-year bluegrass friendship that these two legendary musicians have shared.
