Strung Like A Horse(10:30-midnight) is going to take the 18th edition of the Hootenanny out with a bang! Check out this great video shot at Cherokee Farms in LaFayette, GA, of the song “Gypsy Jane”.
TDawg Presents welcomes back Packway Handle Band(8:30PM-10PM) to the Hootenanny stage for the second time! This Athens, GA-based quintet really grips you as they make their way through their set with genuine songwriting and tight instrumentation, single-mic or all-electric. You don’t know what you’ll get sometimes!! Check out this clip from Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Packway Handle Band performing “I Wish I hadn’t Done It”.
Please welcome Jason Kenney (6:15PM-7:45PM) to the Hootenanny stage for the first time! This incredible singer/songwriter comes from just down the road in Dahlonega, and you feel the local roots in his music. Pure and true is his music, and you’ll see for yourself in the video for “Turn This Sorrow Into Joy”, title track from his latest album.
Atlanta’s own Cajun masters Hair of the Dog bring their rockin’ sound to the Tree Stage at the Hootenanny for the first time! Trust me, they’re the real deal. Been around a long time playing what they love, and pedal steel maestro Bill Fleming will keep his rig up there for the rest of the evening so you never know what will happen with all those great musicians gathered all night long! Check out this raw yet rockin’ clip from a neighborhood party (I was there!) featuring HoD performing “Leona Had A Party”. Your whole family will be kickin it during this set!
The Higher Choir (1:45PM-3:15PM) has been climbing the ladder for several years now, and folks, they very well might be reaching a moment of reckoning, in a state of mind where their Southern rock sound touches your bones and your soul! They wowed the crowd on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Cruise, have been packing venues around the Southeast, and as you see from this video, “The Working Title” from their CD Release party in 2013, it’s a kickin’ sound that has you boogey’in! I first saw these folks at the Wheelbarrow Fest in Reynoldstown a few years back, and they blew me away!
Performing on the Music On Main Street (MOMS) stage, Gibson Wilbanks Band is going to bring two sets (3:15PM-4PM, 5:30PM-6:15PM) , one after The Higher Choir and the second after Hair of the Dog, that are gonna have you groovin’ even more so. The interlay of slide and rhythm by both Carly Gibson and BJ Wilbanks, along with at-large artist Richie Jones on drums and the insane harmonica of Brad Bauman, will make these two sets ones you don’t want to miss! The soulfulness comes through loud and clear on this video, enjoy!
TDawg Presents is excited to welcome the dynamic trio Dangermuffin to the 18th edition of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny! If you’ve not had a chance to familiarize yourself with them quite yet, this is your chance, and there promises to be a few special sit-ins that might happen along the way through two-set, 3 hour performance! From Folly Beach, SC just outside of Charleston, their melodic sound represents three musicians bringing you something unique. Dangermuffin has recently completed a run of shows with bluegrass buddies The Larry Keel Experience and is gearing up for an extremely busy festival season this year! They perform Friday night only, and you must have a two-night pass to see them. So plan on coming out Friday, get your campsite up, and hear that set which is just for YOU!
The two videos – “Cicada” and “Little Douglas” – are from a performance at The Pour House in Charleston.
TDawg Presents is excited to assist in bringing you An Evening with Del McCoury and David Grisman, two living legends and masters of their craft. Folks, this is going to be an absolutely special night and one you don’t want to miss! Some of you might remember the legendary
Del McCoury met David Grisman met at the first show Del ever played (on banjo) with Bill Monroe in the spring of 1963 at New York University in Greenwich Village. Three years later, Del & Dawg played their first gig together in Troy, NY at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They both celebrated the arrival of first-born sons, Monroe Grisman and Ronnie McCoury, within a month of each other.
Through the years they have shared the stage at venues and festivals across the country and in 2012 released Hardcore Bluegrass, a unique collection of bluegrass classics, made at two Dawg studio jam sessions in the 1990s, Del & Dawg celebrates the nearly 50-year bluegrass friendship that these two legendary musicians have shared.
Below is a fine video shot at Relix featuring not only Del & Dawg but the rest of the Del McCoury Band as well! Enjoy, and hope to see you at the show!
TDawg Presents is excited to bring N. GA favorite Jason Kenney onto the lineup for Saturday evening, April 11! Kenney is a Dahlonega native who has been impressing folks for quite a while now with his songwriting and musicianship, and you know he won’t disappoint in his own back yard! In addition, please welcome a new band on the scene that features veterans of the circuit for many years calling themselves Blackberry Possum. Wildman Steve has brought former bandmate Brian Fowler (Bibb City Ramblers) as well as stellar Alabama guitarist Tony Brook into the mix for what promises to be one of those sets that you don’t want to miss!
Here’s a video of Jason Kenney and band in action at the Crimson Moon in Dahlonega. Enjoy!

My wife and I attended the Dangermuffin concert last Saturday night at Eddie’s Attic, witnessing one of the freshest, finest performance in quite a while! The worst cold spell of the winter is the perfect time to announce the SPRING edition of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny happening Friday and Saturday, April 10-11, at beautiful Starbridge in Murrayville, GA! Make your plans NOW for the second weekend in April to gather with your family and friends for the 18th installment of TDawg’s Back Porch Hootenanny, and stay tuned for complete details coming next week!
I feel like it’s a perfect time to reflect on the recent edition of Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny. Each year has surpassed expectations on every level, and with next year being the fifth annual, expect some extra special jams that reach a musical crescendo representing a cornucopia of styles and performed by some of the finest musicians Atlanta and the Southeast has to offer (just like the first four!)! 😳 I will say here that the love and admiration among the artists really makes for an incredible night of music – the sit ins on each set perfect in the moment, no rehearsal necessary (unless you’re Blueground Undergrass and haven’t played together in several years!). It was a pleasure to once again team up with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, and without the support of our sponsors – Mellow Mushroom, Sierra Nevada, Tree Sound Studios, Tree Leaf Music – we would not have been able to pull off this year’s Hootenanny!
Deep Blue Sun kicked it off in grand fashion with special guests abound, featuring special guests abound throughout the set and culminating in a version of “Let It Be” with Papa Mali that rivaled any. They certainly set the bar high for the night, and no one failed to continue raising it through the evening.
Delta Moon did what they do best, entwined by the swampy Delta blues and slithering dual slide to create a groove all their own and keeping the folks wanting more!
Grant Green Jr. captivated the audience with his sincere and soulful performance that soothed the soul and took you away from your worries and had the crowd singing along with him.
Papa Mali returned to the stage for the second time in the four year run of the Holiday Hootenanny and did not let down. Featuring a mesmerizing, almost voodoo style of guitar and vocals combined with some mighty fine interplay with mandolinist Bobby Miller, and backed by his former drummer (currently with Donna the Buffalo) Mark Raudabaugh and Grammy-winner Yonrico Scott (played with EVERYONE), Papa Mali simply left me in my tracks at one point in the performance.
Col. Bruce Hampton never disappoints, and damn did he come through on this fine night! Bringing together a lineup that included the legendary Johnny Knapp on keys and John Hibbert on the saxophone, Bruce created a big band style jam that only the Colonel would be capable. Featuring a horn section, three drummers (including a lil’ fella – Richie Jones’s drum student), two percussion, Kevin Scott on the bass and Papa Mali sitting in, the set was full of surprises when you would expect nothing less.
The night wrapped up with a reunion by one of my favorite groups, Blueground Undergrass. It’s been several years since we had laid eyes on the lineup present for this set, but it was worth the wait! Closing out with their unique and beautiful version of Black Muddy, it was unfortunate that the set was cut short due to time constraints, but just having them present again and enjoying being together was worth every ounce of energy it took to get them to the Holiday Hoot!
Happy Holidays to everyone and I hope that each of you has a Happy New Year!
I don’t think there is any doubt that the 4th Annual Atlanta’s Holiday Hootenanny, much like the previous editions, is going to be the finest show of year! Get your advance tickets to ensure your presence at a Terminal West that night and know you’re supporting a great cause in Atlanta Habitat!
Jump on board the Holiday Hoot Express right now and help the cause! Please spread the word to your friends and family about this amazing concert experience, all for a wonderful cause ~ Atlanta Habitat for Humanity.
There will be some mighty fine items to bid for during the silent auction as well, so stay tuned!
